A Cubby With Character

A student painting the outside of the cubby

This is my first term working as a chaplain at Carraragarmungee Primary School. I’ve been working with a group of grade 5s and 6s students on leadership, character, and giving back to the community.

Together we’ve painted a cubby, a friendship seat, and a produce stall where the school can sell produce from our garden. This experience has opened up lots of conversations with kids, as they get to know me. Many of our students don’t have the kind of foundation that will support them when life gets hard, and when they start looking for deeper meaning. I hope to work with them to help build that.

Working on the cubby together, I watched them go from an attitude of, “Let’s just slap some paint here and there,” to wanting to make sure that there were no splodges of the wrong colours. They’re taking pride in their work, and taking ownership of their place at the school.
